Assembling a program in bioinorganic chemistry that is scientifi­ cally relevant, well defined, and self-consistent is not an easy task. In this attempt we decided to consider zinc enzymes, copper oxidases, cytochromes and cytochrome oxidase. The choice is in part due to the great attention that the current specialized literature devotes to these topics, which are now debated among chemists, biochemists, biophysicists, etc .. We believe that hydration reactions, hydrolytic and oxidative processes have much in common from the point of view of the reaction mechanisms, the comprehension of which represents a frontier of science. For these reasons these topics have been the subject of the NATO-ASI held at San Miniato, Pisa, Italy, from May 28 to June 8, 1982. We hope we can transfer here the main conclusions of what (we believe) was a very stimulating scientific meeting. We would like to thank the local saving bank, Cassa di Risparmio di San Miniato, for helping in many ways. The financial contribution from the European Research Office of the US Army, and from the Bruker Spectrospin s.r.l., Italy, is also acknowledged. Today, the English scientist and poet Andrew Crosse (1784-1855) is almost exclusively remembered for his mysterious "Acarus electricus," a form of mites that seemed to have been created during one of his electrical experiments. But this is unfair.

Among his friends were the mathematician Lady Ada Lovelace and prominent scientists such as Sir Humphry Davy and Michael Faraday, but also romantic poets such as Robert Southey and Walter Savage Landor. These and many other celebrities from the first half of the 19th century occurs in this colorful and vivid memorial, written and published by his widow Cornelia Crosse in 1857. Here is depicted not only the life and work of the eccentric and likeable Andrew Crosse; it is also an anthology with examples of his literary output.

A typical amateur scientist of the upper classes, Andrew Crosse experimented for his own enjoyment and not for glory. The same applies to his writing; Crosse's poems circulated among friends, but was only occasionally published during his lifetime. In the poems, prose and letters you see his obsession with the riddle of life and death.

All this should be seen in a romantic light. During this era, natural philosophers wanted to form a synthesis of science with aesthetics, imagination and breakneck speculations -- Romantic science was a concept. Researchers and laymen alike was fascinated by electricity, which was presumed to be the key to the mystery of matter and life. Explaining all mysteries of the Universe was within the boundaries of opportunity, and a gifted philosopher could anticipate the answers with his imagination and intuition. Did Crosse really see the electric mites be born in his laboratory 1837, or was this also a phantasy?

Robert Southey leaked information about the mites to the press, and the sensation turned into moral panic. Crosse was accused of interfering with the Creator’s work and to run errands for atheism. Other scientists dismissed him as a charlatan. The sensible Andrew Crosse abandoned these experiments for peace and quiet. And possibly he was not himself convinced that the mites arose spontaneously by the interaction of electricity and chemicals, but were due to the equipment having been contaminated by airborne eggs. This book also shows that Crosse experimented with his electric mites during a period of strong psychological pressure because of death and a controversy with a research colleague.

After her husband’s death, Cornelia Crosse (1827-1895) became an acclaimed author of popular science.

TCP unfairness issue has become pronounced in IEEE 802.11 WLANs due to the distributed coordination function (DCF) mechanism in the 802.11 MAC protocol. With the existing of multi-rate capability in WLANs, another performance anomaly of 802.11 can be detected where the performance of a WLAN is determined by the stations with the lowest data transmission rates. The objective of this research is to allocate fair proportional throughput among TCP flows of competing stations in IEEE 802.11 multi-rate infrastructure WLANs by distributing appropriate window and packet size according to the availability of buffer size in the access point. The research scenario focuses on the issue of fairness among stations having different numbers and directions of flow with vary of data transmission rates. In this work, a rated-window size scheme is performed by proportionally adjust the window size based on transmission rate of each flow. The results of total throughput and fairness index are compared with previous schemes.

Faced with severe budgetary constraints, a radically reduced force structure, and a crippling intellectual dogmatism, the American Infantry struggled throughout the interwar years to modernize its doctrine. Finlayson examines these difficulties, beginning with an overview of the experiences of the primary combatants of the First World War, comparing their battlefield doctrines with that of the American Expeditionary Force. The brief American appearance on the battlefield did much to shape the convictions of those men assigned the task of developing doctrine after the war.

The findings of the post-World War I Superior Board provide valuable insight into how institutional conservatism and the dogmatic approach to new ideas that existed among senior Army leaders stymied possible doctrinal advances. The Army would suffer greatly in the post-war demobilization and the subsequent ravages of the Great Depression. With little money and few soldiers spread around far-flung posts, little advancement in terms of doctrinal development was possible. As the likelihood of war became more imminent in the 1930s, a concerted effort to modernize was made; however, the magnitude of the task made success virtually impossible-a situation that was evident in the Infantry's poor performance in the early battles of the war. The U.S. entry into World war II would, unfortunately, find the infantry branch only partially prepared for the battle field of 1942.
